Lacey and Larkin are two martyrs who have been arrested at the hands of a police force run by Sheriff Arpaio. Arpaio has been a bully for many years. He has bullied people in jails, journalists who exposed his treachery and Latinos.
The harassment that he thought he could get away with was not ignored. For example, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were apologized to in the form of $3,700,000 from Maricopa County. Also, Arpaio got into trouble with the federal courts over the fact that he was racially profiling, as well as the fact that he was racially profiling despite having been told in the past to stop.
Sheriff Arpaio and His Actions
When it comes to why Sheriff Arpaio screwed around with Lacey and Larkin, it is pretty clear cut. The reason why he screwed around with them was because of the fact that he consciously felt threatened by them. For years, they exposed his lies and unethical decisions. Sheriff Arpaio took the first opportunity that he had to find a reason to charge them for something.
When it comes to why Sheriff Arpaio screwed with Hispanic people, the explanation has to do with both his conscious and subconscious minds—though perhaps a bit more with his subconscious. Sheriff Arpaio came of age in a country where the majority had always been white and there had always been a major rift between whites and perceived non-whites. Non-whites are seen as more foreign and generally likely to cause trouble or be involved in illegal activities. On top of it, Sheriff Arpaio is 85 years old.
This means that he came of age and lived most or part of his life in a time where rampant, blatant bigotry against minorities was more commonplace and accepted. It’s not necessarily his old age that is the problem—it is the fact that he comes from a generation where intolerance rubbed off on a lot of people. What is interesting is that Arpaio’s last name is Italian. At one time, Italians were looked down upon as a loud, inferior ethnic group of people. There are even some remnants of that attitude, today, despite the fact that people with Italian heritage have assimilated into white society.
It is interesting when you see people from less liked ethnic origins treating people of less well-regarded origins with disrespect. You can also see this happen among non-white groups in America.
